Question: What is a domain?

Answer: A domain name, or domain, is the name of a website that you can type into your web browser to access it. It’s like the street address of a house, but for a website. A domain is not a website, it is just an address for a website.

Question: Can I buy a domain?

Answer: No, you can rent a domain for a period of time and when the time you have rented it for is due to expire you can rent it again. Renting a domain is done in yearly increments, usually between 1 and 15 years.

Question: Do I need a domain to have a website?

Answer: Yes, in order to have a website you need an address for people to go to to access your website, this address is called a domain.

Question: How much does a domain cost?

Answer: The cost for a domain can vary depending on how popular the domain is likely to be, whether it is .com, .co.uk, .org, etc and how long you chose to rent the domain for.

Answer: A website is what people see and interact with when they go to a specific domain.

Answer: Hosting is where your website is stored in order that people can access your website and interact with it.

Question: Do I need hosting to have a website?

Answer: Yes, without having any hosting there is nowhere for your domain to go to to display your website. 

Question: Where can I get hosting?

Answer: You can obtain hosting in 3 main ways, 1. buy/rent a server specifically for you to host your website on, 2. Rent hosting services from online vendors for you to host your website on, or 3. Have a 3rd party like AM website designs provide you with hosting services.

Question: What is domain specific email?

Answer: When you rent a domain you can also have domain specific email, so if your domain is www.my-website.com you can have email addresses such as info@my-website.com, sales@my-website.com, basically you can have any prefix @my-website.com. 

Question: Do I need domain specific email?

Answer: No, you do not need domain specific email, however it is considered more professional for a business or organisation to use domain specific email addresses rather than @gmail.com, @outlook.com, etc.

Question: What is online presence?

Answer: Having an online presence can be as simple as having a website, however these days most businesses or organisations have various social media accounts and a Google business profile.

Question: Do I need an online presence?

Answer: In todays world it is expected that any business or organisation has some level of online presence, how much you choose to have is entirely up to you.

Question: Can AM website designs help me build my online presence?

Answer: Yes, we can build you a website, create social media accounts, take ownership of a Google business profile for you and if you want us to we can manage them all for you.

Question: What is involved in having social media accounts?

Answer: Ideally you need to add content to your social media accounts on a regular basis, such as images of works you have carried and/or text explaining what you as a business or organisation have been doing. You can choose to do this yourself OR you can out source this to a 3rd party such as AM website designs.
